International program «Climate Smart initiative»:
Cloud solutions for sustainable development
The International Academy of Informatization has been conducting the digitalization of agriculture and precision farming for several years. This topic was announced by the Academy at UN events on sustainable development in 2017 and 2018.
The Academy presented to the UN two programs for the introduction of new cloud information technologies for precision farming.
The global company DTN, a leader in providing weather services, including agriculture, was a partner in the development of these projects.
Particular attention of the participants of the events at the UN was attracted by the “Сlimate Smart Initiative” program. The international program is designed to unite the efforts of different countries to build a system for monitoring weather changes in agriculture.
It is the instability of the weather in recent years that is the most important concern for global agricultural production. Agriculture covers large regions, and farmers need an accurate local forecast for making important operational decisions.
The Academy and DTN have set the task of finding solutions that will provide farmers with accurate data and, on their basis, will make informed decisions, save on costs and increase the profitability of production.
Based on DTN’s experience and on new information technologies, the Academy presented the matematemate Climate Smart Initiative ’program and also developed Smart Farmer’s proposals for Russian farmers.
Today, the first pilot project of the Smart Farmer program is already being implemented in the Tambov region, on the farm of the Belaya Dacha company.
In turn, the program "Climate Smart Initiative" found a response in different countries. Cloud solutions offered by the initiative are already being implemented in Kazakhstan. Presentations of modern weather services for farmers were held in Bulgaria, Uzbekistan, Italy, Finland, Brazil, Colombia, Australia, Iraq.
In 2019, the Academy plans to hold a special international conference “Climate Smart Initiative”, analyze the results of the first pilot projects and discuss the prospects for international cooperation in the use of cloud technologies for precision farming.
Ron Sznaider,
CEO DTN:
To save agriculture from climate change, we need better weather forecasting

Tiny monitoring stations that alert farmers to every change in conditions on their farms could help them better understand the extreme weather shifts that are becoming more common due to climate change.
Region of priority application of new technologies of the Climate Smart initiative: Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan wants to increase food production and exports 40% by 2020, and has also already begun an effort to digitize its agricultural sector: This year, the government launched an online information portal for farmers, which over 100,000 people regularly check. That, Ron Sznaider says, made launching the Climate Smart Initiative in Kazakhstan very simple–the data that the DTN sensors collect can flow directly into the portal, where farmers can read updates in real time.

Valerio Chinca European Sales Director of DTN received an invitation from the Ambassador of Italy in Finland Gabriele Altana to a special event at the Italian Embassy in Helsinki .
On this occasion and on Behalf of DTN and the IIA Americas, Valerio successfully presented the Climate Smart initiative to the Italian Ambassador. Together, DTN and IIA have launched the Climate Smart Initiative, which aims to address three of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by countries throughout the world starting in 2015.
The Initiative will introduce innovative technologies in agriculture and climate monitoring that will increase agricultural production, monitor and measure weather and climate in unmonitored rural areas, and reduce the impact of weather volatility and natural disasters on governments and civil society.
Valerio has highlighted DTN’s partnership with the International Informatization Academy (IIA), an NGO with General Consultative Status with the United Nation Economic and Social Council since 1995. A more in depth follow up meeting with Italian and Finnish specialists will happen in early 2019.

New technologies for sustainable development
This was the main theme of the special event held by the Academy and the DTH on The UN High-level Political Forum 2017. At the special side event the Academy and the DTH presented a new program for the UN - «Climate Smart initiative».
Goal 17: Mechanisms for global partnerships for Sustainable Development
This was the main theme of the special event held by the Academy and the DTH on The UN High-level Political Forum 2018.
The event was held on July 13 as part of the Forum program.
The side event aims to discuss mechanisms for global partnerships for sustainable development, to present the practice of cooperation and projects for joint participation of different countries.
Special attention will be paid to practical measures to achieve:
-
Goal 2: End hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture
-
Goal 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
A program Climate Smart Initiative developed by the Academy in collaboration with DTN was presented to the Forum participants at the side event.
The event was attended by heads of several missions of states to the UN, representatives of the World Bank, public organizations, and innovative companies.
“This meeting will feature a variety of discussions and presentations that will address critical resources that partnerships like ours can bring to governments as they work to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all,” said Dr. Oleg Kulish, executive vice president, the IIA. “We look forward to presenting information with DTN on how governments can help agriculture adapt to our changing climate and continue to feed the world.”
Representatives from various government agencies, IIA, DTN, business organizations and others will meet to discuss how the Climate Smart Initiative’s technologies and solutions can help address world hunger and help the world’s farmers adapt to the changing climate. The side event is being held as a follow-up to the Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology, and Innovation for the SDG (STI Forum 2017), where the Climate Smart Initiative was first introduced.
“The Climate Smart Initiative is helping countries address the increasing impact of climate change and weather volatility on agriculture globally,” said Ron Sznaider, chief science officer at DTN. “Together with IIA, we are able to work with governments around the world and provide them access to weather and agriculture insights that can inform their policies and reduce the impact of weather volatility on their citizens.”
